RESULTS is glad to announce that we will be having our next conference called entitled: “Wold TB Day: still neglected, still killing” on the 1st of March 2011. In light of the 29th anniversary of World TB Day taking place on the 24th of March 2011, we are asking our activists to write to their MPs to ask them to take action to ensure that the UK government puts the political priority necessary into the fight against TB and HIV. Our special guest on the call this month is Joel Spicer, senior strategist at Stop TB Partnership. Stop TB partnership is a network of international organisations, countries, donors from the public and private sectors, governmental and nongovernmental organisations that work together to achieve a world free of TB. In 2006, the Stop TB partnership launched the “Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015” which aims to reach the UN Millennium Development Goal 6 and halve the total number of TB cases and deaths by 2015 compared with 1990 levels.
TB is the biggest killer of people living with HIV and the third largest cause of death among women of reproductive age. Unlike AIDS, TB is treatable and curable in all but the most extreme cases. What is lacking is not the relevant medical know-how, but the political will and funds to combat the disease.
The global spending on TB is totally inadequate and the global risk that TB poses is unrecognised internationally especially in the face of new threats from TB-HIV coinfection and the increasing incidence of drug-resistant cases of TB. This is why on top of our monthly action, RESULTS is organising a secondary action for all of our grassroots. We are inviting you to come to Parliament Thursday March 24th to lobby your constituency MPs face to face on the issue of TB. If you would like more information on the call and the lobby day please contact Mariam on Mariam.firstname.lastname@example.org
