UNESCO admits that data on the number of disabled children in education is not available

Last month, RESULTS volunteers wrote to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics to ask them to lead a global effort to monitor progress on increasing the number of disabled children who get a basic education.

In his response, Hendrik Van der Pol, the Director of the Institute, confirmed that no international institution is collecting statistics on education for disabled children, despite the fact that this group makes up one-third of all children who are out of school. Although he noted that “statistics on disabled children is and will remain one of areas of our close attention”, he did not outline any concrete steps that would be taken to collect the necessary information from countries.

A copy of Hendrik Van der Pol’s response is available here.
